Frequently asked questions about radon

Our goal at Idaho Radon Services is to educate all Idahoans about radon and the risks involved with exposure. Check out common questions below.

What is radon?

Radon is a radioactive gas that rises from the soil when uranium decays. It rises from beneath homes and gets trapped indoors, and prolonged exposure can lead to lung cancer. Because you can't detect it with your senses, the only way to know if you have a high radon level is to complete a radon test.

How prevalent is radon in Idaho?

According to the Idaho Department of Health & Welfare, 40% of radon tests performed in Idaho tested high.

How dangerous is radon?

Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers in the United States. Because it can't be detected by our senses, the effects of radon often go undetected until people are very sick.

What is considered a high radon level?

Radon in the air is measured in picocuries per liter of air (pCi/L), and there is no level of exposure that is technically "safe." It is recommended to consider mitigation if your home tests at or above 2.0 pci/L. The EPA recommends strongly recommends mitigation at 4.0 pCi/L.

How much does it cost to install a radon mitigation system?

On average, it costs $1,700–2,000 to install a radon mitigation system.

What is a safe radon level?

While radon exists in low amounts outside, there is no “safe” level of exposure. The EPA and Surgeon General recommend considering mitigation if your home tests at or above 2.0 pCi/L and the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the same at 2.7 pCi/L or above. Regardless, every Idaho home should be tested for radon.
