How to conduct a radon test in Idaho

When performing a radon test, it’s important to follow the specific instructions in your test packet, including requirements for the conditions of the home. Airflow, temperature, and test placement can alter the results' accuracy, and we’re here to help you understand how to get the most accurate results possible! Conditions for radon testing in Idaho are important to follow.

Radon testing conditions

During the testing process, there will always be things you can’t control, including the weather. When the weather changes, the air pressure in the home changes, which causes more or less radon to be drawn in. For this reason, it’s recommended to test your home every two years, alternating between summer and winter. Remember, we're here to provide professional support and guidance throughout this process.

No matter what season you test in, there are factors inside your control that help ensure accurate test results. First, you must have what are called “closed house conditions,” which means that 12 hours before testing begins (and throughout the entire 48 hours the test is active), all exterior doors and windows must remain closed. You can go in and out of the house, but avoid propping exterior doors and windows until the testing period ends.

Additionally, air conditioning can be on during the test, but we recommend turning off house fans and swamp coolers, and portable window units must be removed or sealed. We recommend keeping the home between 68–77 degrees and humidity within a livable range. Because of temperature and humidity concerns, testing units should never be placed directly by a fan, or in a bathroom or furnace room. We recommend placing the test in a bedroom or office for the most accurate results. Finally, unless a fireplace is your primary heat source, it should be turned off, too.
